Local eighth-graders introduced to opportunities at Herkimer BOCES

HERKIMER – More than 600 eighth-graders from Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES component districts and the Pathways Academy at Remington are visiting Herkimer BOCES this school year through the Journey from 8 to Great program.

The Journey from 8 to Great, organized by School to Careers, is a way to give local students an early introduction to the career and technical education courses offered at Herkimer BOCES.

At the end of the Herkimer Central School District 8 to Great visit on Thursday, Feb. 25, one student shared to the group and STC liaison MaryBeth Napolitano that after visiting the visual communications/media arts classroom, he is thinking about going into graphic design.

“That’s what today was all about – to spark your interest,” Napolitano said. “This was the beginning of your journey.”

Thus far this school year, students from Central Valley, Frankfort-Schuyler, Herkimer, Little Falls, Mount Markham, Owen D. Young, the Pathways Academy, and Richfield Springs have visited Herkimer BOCES for the Journey from 8 to Great. More Central Valley students are visiting on March 17, and Dolgeville students will take the journey on March 22.

During the Journey from 8 to Great, eighth-graders are broken into groups and taken on a tour of the Herkimer BOCES CTE classes by current CTE students. In each of the classes, either the instructor or a student in the class presents to the eighth-graders about the program.

This year, the students also visited the new Valley Pathways in Technology Early College High School classroom, where ninth-graders in the VP-TECH program talked to the guests. Students in the Information Technology Academy, which is now located at Herkimer College, also made a video that was shown to the eighth-graders.

Kerry Reppel, a Spanish teacher at Herkimer Central School District who teaches eighth-graders, said after the Herkimer 8 to Great visit on Feb. 25, that this is her second year coming to 8 to Great, and she has noticed that her former students are thriving in the BOCES environment.

“What I love is seeing the students I’ve had in the past,” Reppel said. “They’ve come into their own, and they are now doing what they love. I see it in them. They’re happy, they’re confident and they have goals and a purpose.”

Reppel also said 8 to Great seemed to be having a positive influence on the eighth-graders.

“I could see some of them get seeds of goals,” she said.

At the Herkimer Central School District visit, Napolitano spoke to the students in the Herkimer BOCES lobby before and after the tours. She recommended that the students explore their possibilities, be advocates for themselves, be innovative, learn soft skills and talk to their parents about the next steps of what they should do if they’re interested in attending Herkimer BOCES.

“I want you to love and have a passion for what you do,” she said.
